Should generally be OK.
The only problem is that if it's left in suspend-to-ram for too long,
it may run out of battery.
Other than that, no problem.

If the battery lasts 3 hours or so while in use, how long should it
last in suspend/hibernation?

Most computers can be set to hibernate (i.e. save the memory image to disk and shut
down) after being "suspended" for a preset time. Power consumption while hibernating
is zero. Use this capability.

Huh??? In suspension, yes. In hibernation? How??? In hibernation, the RAM image is
saved to disk and ALL hardware is turned off just like the 'puter was powered down.
On "boot up" from hibernation, the RAM image is restored from disk and off you go.
OTOH in suspension, the battery power is drained to support RAM - all other hardware
(ports, disk, display) should be turned off.

Don't know Toshibas, but not a single one computer I have/had (IBM, Sony, Fujitsu,
NEC) would drain any substantial power while hibernating. Normal battery drain does
occur even while the 'puter is off, but neither of my laptops would fully drain its
battery in "one or 2 weeks."

I fly regularly to Europe with 2 (or even 3 laptops), all set to hibernate, and
nether shows any battery drain after 15-24 (or often more) hours of hibernating. I
have hibernated my ThinkPad A31 once for over 30 days and it had only a few percent
of battery charge missing.

YMMV.

Suspend uses 1W at an Acer Travelmate 800 Centrino 1.3GHz,
up to 9 W at one of this desktop CPU using pseudo "notebooks"

Not (AFAIK) on my toshiba(s) (portege 3110ct) either.
There is no BIOS suspend-to-disk.
It's suspend to RAM only, which draws around 400mw, and will
drain the battery in a few days.

Annoying.

What if something caused it to wake up from suspend mode and the disk began
spinning while it was being bounced around, would that be a problem?
