Resetting Supervisor Password on HP Omnibook 900
Posted by Robert Resch on July 27th, 2003

Hi!

I've got a HP Omnibook 900 last Friday but the last owner has forgotten
the Bios Setup-Password. The Notebook boots and let's me install any
Software i want to, but there are Settings in the Bios i need to modify
(f.e. IrDA and Power Management).

Is there any Software which writes an empty Password to the
security-Chip? Or: Is it possible to recover the Password?

I've already tried to install a new Bios which resetted the
CMOS-Settings to default which made it possible for me to replace the
Hard-Disk by a bigger one (the default is auto-detect hdd)

Who can help me? I'm the _legal_ owner of this Notebook - but it's hard
to proove because it was a present... I don't have any paper to proove...

Contact HP and send serial number......if it was a gift, why did your most
generous benefactor install a password ?

Why wont you go through HP... there is a mechanism for forgotten passwords.

I wanted to remove the password this weekend not later - the HP Support
was able to help me tooday. The last owner was the boss of a small
company and the employee who has set the password left the company
arount 18 months ago... I've got this Notebook because the HardDisk was
damaged - i replaced it by a new and bigger one. For this i need the
password (and for other settings)

Thanks - they helped me - but it's hard to find out the correct
Telephone Number for the Hotline.

In article <bg3aua$stc$1@svr8.m-online.net>, robert@fli4l.de says...
Usually the password is not permanent, there is some battery inside the
system that keeps the settings alive. If you pull the battery, usually
the settings are lost, including the password.

On some machines it's not easy to get to this battery (it's not the main
battery, but typically some 3V Lithium cell), maybe the HP support can
tell you where that battery is (or you could poke around)?

Technical support is junk...use it as minimally as possible.

Thanks,
John.
