- Sony Vaio display problem

I have a Sony Vaio FX801 that has been working fine for the last year.
Now it has a display problem. The display shows as vertical stripes. I
can just about see the windows, background etc and can guess my way
round to prove it is still working.
I have plugged in my external monitor and get the same stripy display.
I have tried disconnecting the lid and checking the connections to the
display and so far I cannot find what is wrong with it.
If the VGA output has the same problem I don't think it is the display
itself. Has anyone else had this problem and have any idea how to fix
it?
