sound recording w/ EVO n115
Posted by Lance Delacroix on June 30th, 2003

I have a Compaq EVO n115 laptop running XP pro, which includes the
Windoze Sound Recorder program. Sound card is SoundMax Integrated
Digital Audio.

When I try to record using the Sound Recorder, everything works but
the sound is crap. There's a lot of crackling and a steady,
low-frequency buzz. I figure the microphone is junk; it's part of a
mike-headset combo and the cords are obviously unshielded.

Before I sink money into a good mike, I want to know this: Is it
possible to make good, low-noise voice recordings using this laptop
and the Windoze Sound Recorder? It has occured to me that perhaps the
internal circuitry is unshielded and the program itself is garbage;
any opinions on this?

I don't need hear-a-pin-drop quality, but I do want a good enough S-N
ratio so I don't have to apologize every time I play somethng back..

Thanks.
