- switch-off LCD screen, when laptop is still on?
- Posted by PGPS on April 9th, 2007
Is there a way to keep the LCD screen of the laptop OFF, while the
laptop is still working. I want to have this behaviour, when I am
listening to music from laptop when I am travelling and want to
conserve energy.
Also, I would like to know if there are any Operating systems which I
can load onto my PC, which can use minimum energy to just play music
on my PC?
Thanks.

Go into your Power Options and set the monitor to go off after a very short
period ( 5 minutes, for example)

Anyway to switch-off using a hot-key? Or someway to configure a hot-
key?
Thanks.

Compaq Evo N610c turns off LCD when you just close the lid.

I went thru similar logic several years ago when mp3 players cost an
arm and a leg. With the current price of mp3 players, you'll save more
in wear and tear on your laptop battery than the cost of a portable mp3
player. And you won't break the motherboard when the frequent flyer
next to you trips over your cord on the way to the head.
Modern operating systems try to minimize power consumption. In DOS
mode, my laptop runs HOTTT 'cause nobody told the processor to slow down.

this works on my thinkpad T40
go to control pannel ->power options
on the advanced tab, you can select the close lid action to be do
nothing instead of the default suspend.
now you can close the lid whenever you want to carry the machine
around or just run it with the display off.
you then need to use a key sequence (Fn-F4 on my thinkpad) to really
suspend.
I prefer this way of running things - not so much for power save as
for safely moving around while i'm running.

This varies by laptop. For instance, on IBM Thinkpads, pressing
Fn+F3 typically turns off the display while leaving the laptop
running. Do you know what brand and model you have? (You don't mention
it in any of your posts.)
