- Swoping HDD's in a laptop : Is this ok ?
- Posted by amstereofan on June 26th, 2003
I want to simply take out the HDD currently in my laptop and bung in another
to try another operating system. Is this practice totally ok ie will I
loose any data by keep swopping HDD's, I can't see how but it's so quick to
change HDD's with a laptop unlike a desktop pc

Sure, you can change the hard drives, no problem (well, on most laptops).

Another option is to get an external drive bay (E.G.: Firewire or USB2.0)
and set the laptop CMOS settings to boot from the external drive. This is
of course dependent on the BIOS of the laptop but...no opening the laptop
case!

I very much doubt if the bios will allow booting from an external
drive. Generally, changing a HDD in a laptop is not that difficult,
obvious it depends upon the design, but most are accessible, at least
I think so!
From your post it seems to me the "best" solution is to buy an
external usb or firewire enclosure and mount your "new" HDD there. It
won't be bootable but I don't see that as a negative.

Well the user does not state the age of the laptop. Both of my so called
"Crappy Compals" support it. I do it all the time. The internal drive runs
XP pro and the external drives have 2003 server and linux!
