Thinkpad 570E: upgrade with DVD+RW?
Posted by Jonathan Nitschke on December 3rd, 2003

Hello all,

I am the proud owner of an archaic thinkpad 570e, which I have
upgraded in almost every possible respect, save one: the ultrabase DVD
drive is still the old Toshiba SD-C2102, circa '99 or so. Has anyone
succeeded in upgrading an ultrabase drive (or a TP 600 series ultrabay
drive) to a DVD+RW device? Are these pretty much standard, i.e. after
swapping the rails and the adaptor that fits on the end, will any slim
notebook CD/DVD drive become an ultrabase device? The one I would
really like is the Panasonic UJ-815B, the one that comes with the new
powerbooks.

Thanks,

Jonathan Nitschke

I did this for a 600E. Trick was to use a RW drive that had the connectors
(at the back of the drive) in the same position as on the 600 drive.

THink there are limited number of drives that will work. Bought one on eBay
for a 600X and it worked fine.
