Thinkpad boot up message
Posted by Andy on April 28th, 2008

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X61 running on Vista basic for a little while.
Each time when I boot up, I got this dialog box:

User Account Control:
A program needs your permission to continue,
If you start this program, continue,

Utility for TPM key recovery
Lenovo (United States) Inc.
C:\program files\Lenovo\Client Security Solution\cssplanarswap.exe

Detail:
User Account Control helps stop unauthorized changes to your computer.
(Continue) (Cancel)

If I leave this message there awhile without doing anything, it will close
itself and continue the boot up sequence.

Can you tell me what this new message means and anything I should do? I
Googled this ¡°TPM key recovery¡± all I can make out is something about
full disk encryption, which I do not think I am doing anything to it.
Because I turn OFF the Client Security Solution of this Thinkpad X61.
Thank you very much.

Andy, why not disable it from starting with MSCONFIG? Under the General
tab, select Selective Startup. Then go to Startup tab and uncheck that
program.

I run HiJackThis and cannot identify the name of the program.
Can anyone tell me the program name that I can remove? Thank you.

You should find it under the second column and you are looking for the
following:

"C:\program files\Lenovo\Client Security Solution\cssplanarswap.exe"

If you can't do this for whatever reason, bootup in safe mode and rename
"cssplanarswap.exe" to something else. Like "cssplanarswap.exe.stop" or
something. Now "cssplanarswap.exe" doesn't exist and you can reverse it
whenever you want too. Thus it is as good as dead for now!

When you bootup and Windows might complain that "cssplanarswap.exe"
doesn't exist. Well no big deal, as you can find it in the Windows
registry and remove the entry. If you don't know how, just ask.

Bill, running MSCONFIG, these are the only similar programs listed

Presentation Director c:\program files\Lenovo\NPDIRECT\TPNF7SP.exe /r
On Screen Display c:\program files\Lenovo\HOTKEY\TPOSDSVC.exe
Maintenance Manager c:\program files\Lenovo\Away Tasks\AwaySch.exe
Client Security Solution "c:\program files\Lenovo\Client Security
Solution\cssauth.exe" silent
BLOG rundll32
c:\progam~1\ThinkPad\UTILIT~1\BTVLogEx.DLL,StartBa ttlog

Is there anyone of these will show up in HiJackThis so that I can have it
removed safely.
Thank you very much for your help.

You could safely turn off all of these on startup. (Note HOTKEY probably
handles the "FUNC" operations on your keyboard).

Your next step in MSCONFIG is to look under the Services tab, check the
box that says 'Hide Microsoft Services'. You can start identifying
services that startup that may be causing issues as well.

You may want to get a hold of a copy of CCLEANER.
Pretty self-explanatory.

I would also do the msconfig and CCleaner operations in a sfae mode
environment

John, I disabled cssauth.exe and the ThinkPad would not go to Vista.

You have it enabled again? If not, try pressing the F8 key when Windows
first starts to load (right after a single beep sound). Sometimes
holding it down and sometimes repeatedly tapping the key will get you at
the menu. There you should be able to go back to the last known good
boot or whatever it is called.

Lets get something straight. Did this computer originally come with Vista?
If so, have you checked Lenovo's website for updated ThinkAccess ( and
whatever esle they call their services) software.
Why? Why not?

At this point it seems your questions should be directed at Lenovo support.
