Thinkpad T21 - shared memory & noise?
Posted by lars on July 26th, 2003

Does anybody know for sure if the Thinkpad T21 series use
shared-memory in their graphics or not? It uses the S3 Savage IX8
Graphics-Chip, some people said it's shared, some said it isn't.
Anybody own such an thing anymore?

Also, who could tell me something about the noise this machine
produces during normal & heavy work - i will be doing some audio-stuff
with it, and a noisy fan would seriously disturb me there....

thx in advance

I've got a T23, which uses a slightly later S3 SuperSavage card with 16MB of
ram, I reckon the ram is built into the graphics chip itself, because it
certainly doesn't use any of the system ram, Windows says I've got 256MB of
ram and if it was integrated it would be 240 instead.

The fan is fairly quiet and the fan designs for both models are quite
similar, it seems as though the design for the T21 heatsink might be more
efficient though so it might not need to run as much as my T23 does. The fan
only ever comes on when it gets too hot, rather than when it's doing heavy
processing, so a lot of this could depend on the temperature of the room.
One thing that I find helps is to turn the processor speed down to Very Slow
even when it's on AC, that stops it from needing to run the fan a lot of the
time. During games or heavy processing, the fan could be on near to all of
the time.
Another part of the laptop that makes noise, on mine at least, is the
inverter on the LCD, this makes a faint buzzing electrical noise but isn't
obtrusive.
