- USB 2.0 pcmcia card not recognized
- Posted by mchariff on August 28th, 2003
I have a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card installed in a Sager NP8880 laptop running Win
XP Pro. SP 1. P4 2.2, Intel 845 chipset. The card is not recognized and
cannot be used on the Sager. It is, however, recognized on my Dell 5000e
PIII 700 running Win XP SP 1 and works flawlessly with my USB 2.0 hard
drive.
Any ideas ?

What do you mean "not recognized"? When you plug it in to the Sager,
Windows acts as if nothing has happened? If not, what does happen?
Does Device Manager show anything at all for this device - such as a
yellow (!) ?

There is no yellow ! mark in Device Manager. When I plug my USB 2.0 hard
drive into it, I don't see it in device manager and thusly, cannot access
the drive. In other words, Windows acts as though nothing has been put into
the PCMCIA slot. At at earlier time, prior to reformating the HD and
reinstalling XP, windows did recognize the USB card but stated that there
was "something wrong" and the speed of transfering files on the USB 2.0 hard
drive was more like USB 1.0 rate. Go figure.

It's not in the device manager with a yellow exclamation or anything else.

Did you get an install CD with the USB card? If so, have you tried
installing that software?
Have you tried running "Add Hardware" to see if that can detect the
card? Sometimes doing that will help clear up a related issue that
could be causing the problem...

Make sure that "Cardbus" support is enabled in the BIOS setup of the
Sager notebook. Often it's off by default.

I had to scrounge for a driver for my card before it worked on my Thinkpad.
