USB and 802.11b pcmcia cards that fit together?
Posted by Gregor Hoffleit on December 17th, 2003

Is it possible to find a pair of USB and 802.11b pcmcia that are
compatible regarding their form factor?

Problem: The antenna of my 802.11b card needs a couple of mm on top of the
card. If I mount the card in the lower slot of my Thinkpad 760E, then the
upper slot is virtually blocked for any card with outlets.

In ASCII art, the card looks like this:

AAAAA
AAAAACCCCCCCCCC
| |
antenna card

As far as I can see, traditional USB cards look similar (since the USB
ssockets are taller than the card, they need a few mm atop of the card).

Therefore, it won't be possible to mount the 802.11b card alongside to
such an USB card.

I'm wondering whether some manufacturer has USB cards that have the USB
slots growing beneath the card, i.e. like this:

UUUCCCCCCCCCC
UUU |
| card
USB slots

so that both cards would match:

AAAAA
AAAAACCCCCCCCCC -- upper pcmcia slot

UUUCCCCCCCCCC -- lower pcmcia slot
UUU

Any hint? I haven't been able to find this yet.

Gregor,

Check out 3Com's (formerly Megahertz) wireless card line with
X-Jack antenna.

It may be what you're looking for as the antenna is not thicker
than the PCCard itself.

Thanks for the hint, I'll look at that.

Still, since I already have an wireless card, I would prefer a USB
card that fits ;-)

Well, if you don't mind a dongle and USB v1 there's the Belkin USB BusPort
Mobile.

I'm sure there are others, check with www.usb.org
