USB flashcard for 98SE - can it work on 98?
Posted by Marc Andrews on September 25th, 2005

Sorry to be off-topic here, but I didn't know where else to post. Anyway, I
have bought a 1gb flashcard in order to transfer some files from my old
desktop which runs Win 98, to my new (as yet unbought) laptop, which will of
course run XP. Now, the problem is, I bought a flashcard which is only
compatible with Win 98SE upwards. I only have the normal 98, and cannot
return the card. I tried installing the 98SE drivers for the device, but no
joy.

So what I would like to ask you knowledgeable folk is: Is there any way I
can make Win 98 recognize this device? (Well, it does recognize it as a USB
drive, but rather doesn't recognise the driver, although it installed with
no error messages.) Anyway, at the moment, this drive is unusable on my
desktop. Is there any way to make it work?

TIA

Black Rat

Hi Black Rat... MS used to sell an upgrade CD from W98FE (Windows 98
First Edition) to W98SE for about 10 bucks for a few months way back
when. You can't get them from MS for years I don't believe. Although
they are all over eBay if you what to go that route.

Even if you could take the 1GB flashcard back and get another one.
Very few of them will even work with W98FE anyway and it would be
hard to find one. Hope this helps!

Cheers!

Thanks a lot, Bill! I didn't realise it was possible to get upgrade disks to
W98SE. I'll try Ebay.

Cheers again,

That's a good idea. I'll try that if I don't get anywhere with upgrading my
OS to W98SE, as suggested by Bill.

Cheers Chris,

It really all depends on the drivers. Windows 98 (FE - 1st Edition)
supports only "old" model drivers (used in 95 and 98), while 98SE
supports WDM model drivers (used in ME and XP, although XP's WDM is not
fully backwards compatible). So, if the driver for the USB flash drive
uses the WDM driver model, then 98FE is "out of luck", but if it uses
the Windows 9x driver model, then it would work. Unfortunately, this is
not easy to find out without actually trying it.

Yes, there was a 98 to 98SE upgrade CD, I have one (in fact, I have
several, and no, they are not for sale). It's a shame, because they
were only $15, but at the time, most people didn't appreciate the
magnitude of the truly major internal differences between 98 1st edition
and 98SE.

However, like all Microsoft "upgrade" CDs, it's really not an "upgrade",
it's a whole new OS CD. You can use it to install 98SE on a blank hard
drive, with no OS on it at all. It's just an upgrade CD that is very,
very specific about what CD (or already installed OS) it will want to
see as proof of "upgradeability". In this instance, it will only accept
a Windows 98 first edition CD or installed OS, nothing else .... not
MS-DOS, any version of 95, or any later OS (such as ME).

Note that ALL of the MS "upgrade" CDs are really full product CDs. None
of them use any code from the older OS' that they are upgrading from,
and all of them can install the new OS to a blank hard drive (except for
a few that have only a Windows-based setup program). But they demand to
see either an already installed OS or the CD from whatever OS' "qualify"
for that upgrade.

The word is "Update".
I've one also.

Here's a question for ya;

My computer came with Windows 98, later did the Microsoft "Update" to 98SE
and did a Windows XP Upgrade.

Now, if I do a hard drive Format, which previous CD do I need to install
Windows XP, 98?, 98SE?, or both?

Install using your XP upgrade disk and give it the Win 98 CD when it asks.

Probably either, but 98 should definitely work.
