- USRobotics External Modem Power Supply
- Posted by Gooey TARBALLS on March 16th, 2006
I have a router with a serial port that, I think, will allow me to send (and
possibly receive) faxes via the network if I connect a working External FAX
mode to it and can figure out how to address it from my laptop software.
I saw a USRobitics External Modem at Habitat outlet store today for $1.50
but the transformer / power supply was nowhere in sight. But it got me
thinking about finding a working external fax modem and, tonight/this AM, I
thought to post here to see if anyone had one to sell for next to nothing.
Next to nothing as the probability that this will work as hoped is small to
nil given the WinXP/Microsoft OS I'm saddled with.

1. comp.dcom.modems is probably a better place to post this.
2. There have been numerous USRobotics models and variants over the years,
and many of them use different power connectors and/or voltage specs.
Without your posting the specific model it's a crap shoot as to whether
anyone will actually know if they have a compatible power supply to offer
you.

Your number 2 id dead on. Some of these modems have AC to DC power
adapters, some have AC to AC power adapters and exact model and
sometimes serial numbers are needed to get the correct replacement. USR
(who are they now?) is the best bet.

The only issue is finding out the required power input (AC or DC,
voltage, polarity (almost always tip positive) and current required).
"wall wart" power supplies are available very cheaply (usually under $5)
from quite a few surplus stores, and in most cases the connector can be
changed if necessary. But if the requirements are not marked, finding
them can be difficult.

I'm fairly sure every external modem PSU I've seen is AC output.
I've seen USR ones at 9V and 18V.

Do you know why USR's modems have AC output instead of DC?
