where to get a "dummy-battery" for T-series Thinkpads?
Posted by wylbur7 on August 1st, 2003

Given that it's advantageous to remove the battery when running a T23
(or other T-series) Thinkpad on the AC adapter, we now have a "crater"
that's created at the underside of the computer (because of the
absense of the battery). This hole would not only allow dust/dirt to
get inside, but also exposes some innards to possible damage.

Is there a vendor that sells what would essentially be a dummy battery
that would fit into this space?

On 01 Aug 2003, wylbur7 climbed into "ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad", opened
the box of crayons and scribbled the following:

What the heck is this? Synchrony week? I was thinking just the same
thing a couple of days ago.

But then I read posts here that mentioned that running the laptop
"sans battery" will cause the processor to speed-step down and not
run at full speed. So I stopped looking.

Out of curiousity, why is it advantageous? Somebody once told me to never
run a (newer) laptop without a battery.

That's what the guy at the store said, but he said that if I take out the
battery it's bad for the computer. Something about old laptops used to have
a thing in there to make sure the current came in ok, but new ones just use
the battery for that, or something like that.

But, if you download and use SpeedSwitchXP at this address
http://www2.overture.com/d/sr/?xargs...z1LAzMFwA6xlM=
you can safely remove the battery AND run at full speed... Give it a try...

if link above is bad look here www.diefer.de

I can vouch for the dead battery within two years on my A20p. After two
the years the battery would barely run for 30min.

But how about the dead computer? I rather have a dead battery than a dead
computer.

You know, I was talking to an HP live support person and figured I'd ask
about the battery thing. They said it would be fine to take out the battery,
but either way the batter isn't going to last more than a few years.

In a word, yes, if you want to run full speed sans battery or when running
on battery power...
