Windows Vista Premium vs. Ultimate for a laptop
Posted by piclistguy@yahoo.com on October 15th, 2007

I am purchasing a new laptop and still havent decided between Windows
Vista premium vs. Ultimate. Ultimate does have Bitlocker and a
comprehensive backup/restore utility. However many people have
complained that Bitlocker is almost useless and requires special
hardware and its not clear if the Vista backup/restore utility will
effectively restore applications (not just data) and restore to a
different machine.
For those of you who went with Ultimate, why did you choose it over
Premium.
Thanks

The backup system will restore EVERYTHING. But note, the intent is to
restore it to the SAME computer. NO backup system will necessarily
restore a functional drive partition to a bootable condition on another
machine.

You need Ultimate to get all of both the business features that are
included in Business and the multimedia (media center) features that are
included in Home Premium. And a few features (like bitlocker) that are
in ultimate only.

I purchased this Toshiba P205 laptop in August with Vista Home Premium
pre-installed.

Became very tired of dodgy backup environment in Home Premium
environment, so I upgraded to Ultimate last month.

Upgrade was mainly because of "Complete PC Backup and Restore" programme
and "Subsystem for Unix Applications" (SUA) that are only available in
Ultimate and Enterprise editions of Vista.
