- Wireless won't connect? ? ?
- Posted by Ray Jenkins on June 30th, 2003
Two days ago I bought a mid-range HP Pavilion laptop with the embedded or
integrated wireless capacity.
When I powered up it recognized my Linksys system very quickly and worked
fine -- until I downloaded a batch of Windows XP updates.
Now all I get is "Page cannot be displayed."
It seems to be attempting to connect, because the little double-computer
icon is present on the taskbar. When I click it I get the the Wireless
Network Connection Status screen.
Under the General tab, it tells me the signal is good.
But under the Support tab, I get the following:
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Address type: <unavailable.
IP address: <unavailable>
Subnet mask: <unavailable.
Default gateway: <unavailable>
It seems to me that I need to put some settings here, but can't figure out
how, or what to put.
I inserted my linksys network card in the PCMCIA slot and it works
perfectly. It's just the embedded card that doesn't work.

Try running the setup a home or small office network wizard again.
Also, disable 802.11x authentication, and disable the wireless zero
configuration service. You can try to set this up manually, and it will
work, but with all the services running, the wizard is pretty good at
setting things up.

Thanks Q --
Is it OK to set up a second network when I already have one set up?
I went out to the store, and they suggested I use Windows Restore. That
seems kind of drastic, and I guess I'd have to reinstall the programs I've
put in -- not all that many so far, but could be trouble.

Thanks AJ --
I went to my Network Connections screen, but it doesn't allow me to delete
the wireless card. The "delete" command is grayed-out, both when the card is
enabled or disabled.

hardware, pick it from the list and reinstall. I believe their update
made major WiFi changes, so you must install the card or the drivers
again. My card is the built in Orinoco. My built in ethernet was not
effected so that's why I think the big changes were WiFi related.

AJ -- I finally got the problem fixed by deleting the Bridge from Network
Connections. Hope it stays fixed.
Thanks for the help.
