Wrong power supply/laptop won't turn on now.
Posted by Alan in Boise on June 25th, 2003

Long story short, the wrong power supply was hooked up to my wifes Compaq
Presario 1693. 30 volts D.C. was fed to the laptop instead of 19 volts.
Now the laptop will not turn on. The correct power supply works ok but the
laptop won't turn on now.

I am assuming that there may be a fuse on the board that is blown as a
protection against this kind of abuse. I have built many a desktop computer
but never have ventured into a laptop. I know it may not be recomneded to
self repair but I am not willing to put a whole lot of money into this older
unit. If it is possible to get to the fuse and replace myself, I would love
any help I could get to tell me how. Or is there no fuse and the board is
just fried? If it is I would rather place the $'s towards a new laptop.
Thanks for any help that can be offered.

For whatever my experience is worth, I've had reasonable success working on
laptops. Including a Presario 1240. If I were you I'd give it a shot, since
there's nothing to lose.

I know a guy in Long Island who supplies parts and has even done repair for
me. If you need the name I'll try to look it up.

fried. It's possible that the tip&ring was different. Tip&Ring you
ask? Look at the barrel connector. Tip is the inside, ring is the
silver outside. Mine is +tip, -ring. There's usually a little symbol
on the adaptor where the voltage/amperage is show.

- ---C*--- + would be - ring, + tip.

+ ---C*--- - would be + ring, - tip.

Or too many amps.

Anyway. If your laptop has a dedicated sub-board, try looking on eBay
for one. Great place to get new or used pieces for laptops.

If it's your mainboard, it's not going to be cheap.
