I guess we decide if we want a real one or a virtual one.

A real one would probably meet in some physical place on a regular
basis. This would permit people to bring in machines to get Linux
installed on them, etc., if the group wanted to do such things. Or find
people to give seminars, etc.

A virtual one would just meet on the Internet. I am not sure how useful
such a thing would be since there are already groups such as
comp.os.linux.misc, linux.redhat.misc, comp.os.linux.setup, and probably
many others and I see little point in starting another one. Too much
crossposting as it is.

How much demand is there for such a user's group? If just the two of us,
do we meet in a bar someplace (I do not care to drink much, especially
if driving), a restaurant, or what? Should we do this here to drum up
business, or by private e-mail (where we will be talking only to
ourselves and never find new members that way)? If this hypothetical LUG
comes to be, how is meeting space to be arranged and paid for, and how
is the best time for meetings to be decided?

Hi, Beyer,
I vote for a real one.
As linux gaim more popularity, I believe we could find more linux geeks.
I will try to send out more e-mails on differents places to gather more people.
Is there any free meeting space in the county libary etc? Also we need to
get some funding to setup an Internet connection, web server, mailing list.
How ? any idea? There are some companies around there. AT&T, Lucent ( poor guy),
some small companies in Eatontown, ....?
The LUG may to drum up some business, that is one of my hope.

I think a real one would be more fun, and perhaps more useful as well.

Before we get delusions of grandeur about getting meeting space,
Internet connections, etc., it seems to me we need to assess at least
who the initial real members might be, when we meet (time, day, how
often). Since we, as individuals, all have Internet connections anyway
(at least, very probably), I am in doubt why the NJCALUG would need its
own mail server or web server, and not needing them, what would it need
an Internet connection for? As for meeting space, if there ends up being
just two or three of us, we might just have dinner on a slow night
(e.g., Monday) at a local restaurant. Then if things build up to where
we have a lot of members (perhaps 10), that is the time to consider
regular meeting space, etc. N'est ce pas?

Mailing lists if they are very small can just be a line in the .aliases
file somewhere. If it gets very big, there is a Linux program whose name
I am temporarily forgetting (MajorDomo?), that can run mailing lists,
but I hope we never get so big as to require one.

Hi, Beyer,
I saw other LUGs' web sites, seems they have a meeting once a month.
FYI, there are useful LUG howto.

No, I'm in southern California (hence the e-mail address). I was just
responding to the mailing-list-software question.

I'm up north, but depending on a bunch of things I'm probably
interested in the NJUG idea. Going into NYC for that UG doesn't
appeal at all - I'd rather go south than east.. I'm already running
web/mail servers (and a mailing list) and can add another domain
fairly painlessly if you wind up needing it. My pipes aren't huge,
but I can spare a little capacity for a good cause.

Mike,
once a meeting place is found( should be free, easy to drive etc ),
we will give you the direction.
