Checking out "White Box Linux"
Posted by Google Mike on January 25th, 2004

Have you guys seen White Box Linux:

http://www.whiteboxlinux.org/

Has anyone tried this? Specifically I'm interested in some of its
features before I commit time to checking it out:

1. What version of this list below does it ship with, if at all?
- Apache Web Server
- PHP
- PostgreSQL
- Quanta Plus
2. Is the PHP hooked up properly in Apache?
3. Can the PHP access the PostgreSQL database properly?
4. Does it provide a pretty boot screen like many of the newer distros
(Ark, Suse, etc.)?
5. What are its limitations versus, say, Fedora (aka "Bug Hat")?

reboot it? The answer is no. If you really want one, contribute one!
It was necessarily stripped of a lot of eye candy and RH logos to
comply with copyrights.

its somewhat bleeding edge, experimental nature.

I have been running Whitebox for about a month now on my home server.
It's serving mail, web, ftp, internal file server, news server etc.
Everything I need works fine and it has been solid as a rock.

The people involved in this project have done an excellent job. The
only downside is that it may take a few days before patches appear in
"up2date". This is to be expected in a project like this. If you need
the latest patch right away, you can always get the ".srpm" from the
Redhat mirrors and compile it yourself.

Thanks, this was very informative. I'll look into it, then.
