Distribution Choice
Posted by rajattyagi12@yahoo.com on October 3rd, 2003

Hi,
I need a little help in deciding what distribution i should install on
a PC with the following configuration, so that normal day to day work
is possible ie. surfing, word processing etc. -
Pentium 166MMX
64MB RAM
S3 Trio UV+ Graphics Card
Samtron 428PT/PTL Monitor
Sound Blaster 16 sound card
6.4 GB Hard Disk
CD Drive 32X

I had tried installing RedHat 8.0 but the system was so slow that
nothing productive could be done on it( I did try disabling most of
the unnecessary services).
Another problem is that X Server does not recognize the graphics card.
Which Window Manager would you suggest that is most complete without
too much load.

Thanks.

Doesn't matter, almost any distro should work, you should just not think
about running KDE3/Gnome with only 64 MB RAM, fvwm2 should be blazing fast.

Slackware-9.1 though you may need to install XFree86-3.3.6 from
the pasture directory with that video card but I could be wrong.
Also I wouldn't use GNOME or KDE with a Pentium 166MHz they might
be a little slow, but XFCE or some of the others would do a nice
job on that box.

standards. i do, infact, have a box like this on the network
that i use as a test box. i've successfully installed a
number of modern distros (although i have 98mb ram). the
best is gentoo(.org), since it's compiled for the box.
slackware would be another good choice.

Check out Vector Linux. www.vectorlinux.com It is designed for older
systems with less resources. It is a very small distro. Full
install is only 450MB. Only IceWM or xfce for windowing on the
download version, but either is all you'll need. Very fast.
Slackware based -- 2.4.20 kernel. It comes with two versions of
XFree86 for backwards compatibility: 4.something-or-other and 3.3.6,
IIRC. You'll most likely need to use 3.3.6. I installed Vector on a
300MHz AMD machine with an S3 Trio card, and 4.something didn't work
100% -- mouse wouldn't work, but 3.3.6 worked fine.

Needless to say, there is minimal software included on the download
version. Just enough for a usable desktop. The CD version has lots
more.

In reply to this post I suggest using slackware v9.1. Slackware runs
fine on slower systems. Just don't kde, gnome, or enlightenment. I
suggest windowmaker.

I would say that the amount of RAM is the bottleneck on your system. Perhaps
some distributions are _slightly_ better than others, but the best thing you
can do is to buy more RAM. I tried to run only mozilla and X on a 64MB
machine once, but the endless swapping almost gave me a gastric ulcer. With
128MB it works fine even though the cpu is slow.
