Does SuSE have something like up2date
Posted by David Ball on November 25th, 2003

I'm looking at options instead of RedHat and I wondered if SuSE has
something like up2date for keeping the software updated.

TIA,

YaST Online Update (YOU) performs a similar function. Main problem is
that you can still get stuck in RPM Dependency Hell in the long run.
Best bet? Probably Gentoo or Debian; they're not going anywhere, and
their package management knocks RPM into a cocked hat. HTH,

Suse 9 has the Watcher which sits in your kicker and can be configured to
update automaticlly on a regular basis or you can run "Yast" or "YOU" to do
an update by hand.

This "should" not cause dependency probs as all come from Suse unless you
start compilimg your own stuff and install from source without making an rpm
first so it can be added to the rpm database and can be counted with Yast.

There is a prog called "checkinstall" which can be called instead of "make
install" when using sources that will build and rpm for you thus making it
available to the rpm database.

APT. YaST does an OK job of keeping you up on security updates and such
but is limited in the servers it will pull from.

APT on the other hand is highly configurable, accurate, easy to use
(especially when used in conjunction with Synaptic) and makes keeping SuSE
up-to-date a breeze. Oh, and a...it's completely FREE (no subscription
fee).
