Dual-Boot RedHat 8 Partition Size
Posted by Scott M. Navarre on August 5th, 2003

Hello,

Can anyone tell me, is there still the requirement that Red Hat's /boot
needs to be within the first 8MB of a partitioned drive? I know this used
to be the case with the older Red Hat and LILO...
I will be using Red Hat 8.0 and GRUB for the boot loader, dual-booting
with Windows 98SE.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Navarre

No, that requirement has been removed by a upgrade in the kernel and other software.

Is part of the requirement not down to the BIOS?

Yes, it's primarily a BIOS restriction. Once the BIOS interface spec
was upgraded the other programs involved (LILO, Grub) were updated to
use the new i/f.

If you find a machine with an old BIOS you'll still have the restriction.
