frontend for apt?
Posted by Alex Hunsley on October 3rd, 2003

I've installed apt for RH9 (got it from freshrpms.net), now I'd like to
find a decent front-end for it. Can anyone recommend a stable, decent
one? I've heard of egg, chaosx2, synaptic, etc but am having trouble
finding the downloads for these, despite googling/googlegrouping for
those things. (Can anyone point me to a good resource for apt/apt
frontends for RH?)
(I tried doing apt-cache search synaptic etc. and it didn't find
anything - and I had refreshed the apt caches as well...)

thanks
alex

I've been using aptitude on a debian system for a while. It's a text-only
curses interface, but much better than dselect IMO. Once you get the hang
of it, it's usually fairly straightforward to resolve package conflicts by
working out which packages need to be held or upgraded. I didn't know apt
worked with RH at all, as it deals with debs not rpms.

Go to freshrpms.net, and then click on apt....this tells you how to use
apt-rpm for redhat rpm management.

I've been using synaptic....it's great and easy to use...to get synaptic,
just use apt-rpm once you've installed it:

apt-get install synaptic

Or you can simply download the synaptic rpm from the freshrpm site
and install it the old fashion way.

FYI, the synaptic home page is at:

Good luck

If you looked "real hard" at the freshrpms.net site while you were there,
they have rpms for apt-RPM and syntaptic, as well as a web page that
explains how easy it is to set up.

Apt-get and Synaptic are terrific!
