- How to use voice modem as hands-free phone.
- Posted by Antoni Lacasta i Sull? on December 19th, 2003
I have an external 33600 SupraExpress voice-fax modem attached to my
Linux box, and I would like to use it as hands-free set. The modem has
a microphone input and an "audio" output, it seemed so easy that I
decided to try out. I dial with kermit and I'm able to listen to the
dialing tones, also the the voice of guy who I'm phoning but it seems
that the microphone part is not working. Does anyone figure out why ?
Is there any software able to set the modem in voice mode (if this is
the problem) and dial or vice-versa ? Kermit does the job but is far
from comfortable.
Thanks,
Toni.

Assuming this really is a speakerphone modem (not all voice capable modems
are) there should be some AT commands to set the modem to speakerphone mode.
From an old copy of "AT Command Reference Manual" for a similar Rockwell
based modem (I only have a paper copy so I'm typing this in):
To initiate a call with the speakerphone, issue:
AT#CLS=8 This sets the modem to voice command mode
AT#VRN=0 Disables ringback detection
AT#VLS=6 Selects the speakerphone
ATDT<number>
the modem responds with VCON
Terminate the call with:
ATH
Supra may have modified the command set from the standard Rockwell one but
this at least gives you something to try. I believe I got this manual from
Rockwell which has since been purchased by Connexant. If they no longer
have the manual for your chipset (or just the modem portion, not voice/fax)
you might also check out Zoom's web site as well as whoever bought
Supra/Diamond. If you cannot find this stuff elsewhere I could scan some
relivent pages and email them to you.
The only Linux software that I've used that does anything with voice
features of this kind of modem is vgetty. It comes with a utility called
"vm" which is intended to allow you to record your outgoing message or
playback messages on the handset but it can do quite a bit more.
