HPGL/2 viewer for linux
Posted by Captain Dondo on September 30th, 2003

Anyone aware of an HPGL/2 viewer for linux? I need something that really
works, reliably. I've tried hpgl2ps and hp2xx, and neither works at all
in the real world. They can't correctly render a single hpgl file I've
tried.

I'm plotting using an HP650 driver, pretty much standard stuff.

TIA,

hpgl2ps and hp2xx are _HPGL_ viewers, not HPGL/2 , unfortunately.

And furthermore I don't believe that there are _any_ non-commercial
working HPGL/2 viewers available. If there are I haven't found them
in years of looking but would sure like to hear of one.

A seemingly strange sintuation since HPGL/2 is a published standard
that isn't supported by viewers, whereas HPGL isn't even a standard
let alone published. (Each HPGL device is similar but implements
whatever it wants in terms HPGL. HPGL/2 is speced down to the
last detail).

Anyone have an HPGL/2 viewer?

I'd take a decent commercial one at a low price....

The only ones I've found are very expensive, and do far more than I need.
I need the equivalent of ee for HPGL/2....

Since there are good inexpensive viewers for Windows, you might
consider one of the various emulators like VMWare (though that one is very
expensive also- as much or more than a real computer) and then
run the Windows HPGL/2 viewer inside the emulator.

Could you be more specific about hp2xx' problems with your files please ?
(and a stupid question - you are sure that they are actually HPGL, and not
PCL (RTL) ?)

OK, the one time I remember, I got a bunch of rectangles and a few
snippets of text. AFAIK, it's HPGL/2 - I am using an HP650 driver, and
the printer I'm sending to speaks HPGL/2 and postscript only. I don't
think it speaks PCL/RTL.

Since you're the maintainer, and I'm in need of what you maintain, I'd be
happy to work with you but I'd have to send binaries to you.

If you're willing, email me at yan at seiner dot com and include this
