I cannot see tty1-6 but have X

My Linux box has a strange problem.

On power up, I get the bios stuff-mem check etc.
Then "Signal out of range"
When disk activity finishes I guess the box is ready and can login and
startx and carry on fine, but I like using the text consoles too.

I know I can set default runlevel to 5 and go straight into X but that's
not the point.

What is the equivalent of XF86Config for the machine before X starts?

I have athlon 1700 Xp
NVidia GeForce2 Ti
Apple Studio LCD monitor(very likely the problem) but I have had the
same set up functioning before 3D driver install
suse 8.2 pro

Cheers
