ISO: Linux app to do Yahoo Instant Messaging?
Posted by Kenny McCormack on January 15th, 2004

I think I've read that there is a Linux app that communicates with Yahoo IM.
(In fact, I think it is called something like talk2anything - and works
with all the popular IM systems).

Where do I get it? Is it something you get from Yahoo (like you get the
Windows app) or is it found on a Linux site?

I never heard of any software called talk2anything; however, you certainly
can do a search on Yahoo/Goole or even FreshMeat.net to find out this
software.

Anyway, the ones I use are basically kopete and gaim (besides kmess for MSN
Messenger).

To be honest, no I didn't. It never occurred to me that they (Yahoo) would

I'm not normally this helpless, but I've been playing helpless on TV

P.S. Actually, I was pretty amazed to find that Macromedia Flash has
a Linux version. I had more or less resigned myself to having to use
Windows to access sites that require Flash (and which cannot be
end-arounded on this requirement), but then found that they (Macromedia) do
have a Linux version. I've downloaded it, but not yet installed it (still
kind of think of it as virus/spam-ware and like to keep my Linux machines
free of that stuff).

you're right about it being a virus. i've installed it, and every time i
visit a site that has flash, my browser starts acting all wacky and
displaying various motion-graphics 'flashing' around all over the place.
i don't know how to stop them, it's annoying.

Actually the Linux version of Flash is a very, mature bit of code,
consisting of one(?) library object file - I was also hesitant at
first, but installed it to complement the Opera 7.23 I'm running (paid
for!). It works AFAIK with anything that's Netscape plugin compatible
(ie Mozzie, and probably Galeon etc.).

Works for me!

You must be very new to linux... You'll be very surprised what's

Faulty logic.

Actually, I've been using Linux since kernel version 0.97.

It is more likely that recent adopters are going to be more familiar with
the GUI/Windows-y apps than are us old-timers.

Let me guess - you actually use KDE, right?

Well, it's taken me long enough to get used to linux, since I used to
do tech support at AT&T before SVR4 came out, so I figure I might as
well use ALL of the bells and whistles.

I went from Unix to SCO Xenix, then to OS/2, and then to linux,
starting with Redhat, hopping over to BSD 4.4, and back and forth from
SuSE to Mandrake, back to SuSE and back to Redhat. And since I play
computer games as well as programming and network design, underlay all
of that with windows.... I just recently finished my first gentoo
stage 1 build, but for production I'm still on Redhat 9 until it EOLs.

No, I wouldn't say I was a recent adopter.

And since you were originally looking for the YIM client, which isn't
a text mode app, I suppose you must use some form of GUI too?

I've downloaded the Linux YIM, and am quite happy with it. GAIM looked
like it might be a little troublesome (on this particular task, I am having
a very low threshold of pain).

There's discussion on the YMessenger board to the effect that GAIM may not
work with the latest rendition of the Yahoo server/host. So, it seems
safer to go with YIM.

Thanks go to the person who tipped off to it!

Either they're talking about a future rendition that isn't deployed yet

the Yahoo server/host as I write this message. (Granted, I had to
compile it from source, to get around a dependency problem involving
the spell-checking packages. No doubt a more clueful Linux admin than I
could actually resolve the dependency problem properly...)

If they haven't broken Gaim yet, it doesn't mean they won't.
