kernel compilation fears

If your system is slow, you should investigate why. Perhaps this is as
simple as a memory shortage. Or a wrong video card driver. Or disk
controller in PIO mode. Or incorrect network setup. You should be are able
to detect the exact cause of the problem before attempting to compile
kernels (which is mostly a useless exercise anyway).
