Kernel panic. No init found. Try passing init=option to kernel (RH8.0)

Hi All,

I have following errors when I start my machine(RH8.0).

EXT3-fs:unable to read super block
mount: error 22 mounting ext3
pivotroot: pivotroot(/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed:2
umount /initrd/proc failed:2
freeing unused kernel memory: 212k freed
kernel panic: NO init found. Try passing init=option to kernel

Then every thing stuck there. What should I do next? What I did is I used
"make modules" and "make install_modules" to re-build and load the modules.
However I did backup /lib/modules/2.4.18-14 to a tar file, and restored the
whole directory before re-started the machine.

Thanks for any advice,

.... why did you do this?

... i think you've got restored incorrectly or you've got
some modules missing that are required for boot. how about
booting from one of the grub/lilo boot options such as
'safe mode' or 'recovery' mode?
