Linux sees Windows partition as full
Posted by Doug Laidlaw on March 1st, 2004

I am running Mandrake 9.2. My Windows partition is 6.4 MB with 3.4 MB used.
The df command says that the Windows partition is 100% used, and any
attempt to write files to it is met with a message that there is
insufficient space. The Xdu graphical utility shows the true picture.

Where can I start looking?

Doug.

If the Windows partition is NTFS then you can't write to it. Linux has
read support for NTFS but no reliable write support. Because write
support is considered unreliable it is almost always disabled in the
kernel. Sharing partitions on a network is easy, SAMBA works very well,
but on the same machine you are pretty much limited to using FAT32.

Thanks, General. It is indeed FAT32 (Win98, 4k clusters.) The present
problem is a new development. Norton Disk Doctor said something about
fixing the FAT, but that made no difference.

What version of Windows? Windows/286 ?

What filesystem is it formatted with (FAT?)

What kernel version are you running?

Kernel is 2.4.22-21mdk. Windows is Win98 SE, FAT32 with the new small
sectors made possible with Win98 (I have forgotten what this is called.) It
was O.K. until about a fortnight ago.

Ran NDD again. It said there was still something wrong with the FAT and
repaired it. Now it is all normal again.

If you are running Win98 why don't you get Win4Lin and then all your
problems will be solved. With Win4Lin you run Win9x on top of Linux, i'e'
no need to dual boot, considerably fewer stability problems, and no
need for half assed file systems.
