looking for a distro I can run Win4Lin on
Posted by stepov on March 7th, 2004

I have Knoppix installed on my hard drive. I have a trial version of
Win4Lin 5.0, but it doesn't look like my distro is supported. I am
*very* new to Linux, so I want to take the least complicated route
possible. Any advice/suggestions?

Never used win4lin, the question is why do you need it?

Perhaps there is already native Linux software available, you
just don't know about, try:

The table of equivalents / replacements / analogs of Windows
software in Linux.

Good luck

applications through emulation directly under Linux, there can be good
reasons for running Windoze itself as a task under Linux - this is what
Win4Lin achieves.

Although I am not currently doing so, I have used Win4Lin for certain
applications that I have to support under Windoze and which run as a
shell extension. An emulator would not give the same results, although
in some cases YMMV.

I might add that W4L are very good at supporting all major distributions
of Linux although occasionally with a certain lag as W4L support has to
be compiled into the Kernel.

Thanks for answering. I'm not sure exactly what you mean when you
ask what are my requirements. If you mean what apps will I be running:
Agent newsreader, VirtualDub, Zoom player, Fireworks 2, TMPGEnc, DVD
Movie Factory, Nero, many others. Can you tell me why you suggested
Xandros, rather than some other distro?

thanks again for answering

Win4Lin is terrific and I highly recommend it, but it does have a few
limitations. One is you cannot burn CDs or DVDs form Windows with it.

If you want to use Linux, use it for all you can. There are native
Linux equivalents for many things. Kb3 is better than Nero for buring,
for instance. Pan or slrn for newsreaders. Lots of stuff to choose
from.
