Apparently CNN floated this on Thursday. A few posters to Bugtraq seem
to agree that the grid control network runs at least partly on W2K/XP
machines and uses DCom and RPC.
It is, of course, impossible to believe that such a control network
would run under anything less than the highest possible standards of
encryption, redundancy, firewalling etc., or that any of the admins
would neglect security patches... isn't it?

If I have read the reports properly, most of the actions of the grid were
appropriate given the fluctuating power levels. I have also read of
smaller outages that now look like predictors of the big outage, and I
have read of un-heeded warnings. The investigation and finger pointing is
going to make interesting reading.
