mapping alt-I,J,K,L to act as arrow keys
Posted by Jean Lutrin on September 20th, 2003

Hi there,

I am a fast typist and I map the combination alt-I, J, K and L to
act as the arrow keys (so I don't have to move my right hand) in my
favourite editor.

I'd like to know if this can be done at the X Window System level ?

What I would like is to have, say, alt-J acting as the left arrow
and ctrl-atl-J acting as ctrl-left arrow...

I know how to modify the .Xmodmap but I'm not sure what to put in there
to obtain this behaviour (and I'm not sure either that thats the place
where I'm suppose to do this).

I currently have my favourite IDE using my custom "mappings" but I'd like
to have Mozilla using it too and my mail client too (sylpheed) and other
programs too... But I don't know how to do this...

Any help appreciated,

Jean

Doesn't this screw with the key bindings in your window manager? What
if your application uses Alt itself as an "activation" key? I use vim
all the time, but I don't expect to have its keymappings available
everywhere....

Yeah. http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search , groups
comp.os.linux.x , keywords "xbindkeys xmacroplay".

I don't know if this'll work the way you expect, but try it.

Won't help. xmodmap maps single keys to single keys; you need xbindkeys
and xmacroplay.
