Maxtor 5000LE 80Gb USB2 hard drive

Thinking of using this (SuSE 9.0 Pro).
Anyone had success (or otherwise) with one of these drives?

(Have trawled the newsgroups and SuSE' data base, but there were no
firm conclusions...)

Maurice --

I do not have one of these drives. I have a Maxtor OneTouch 250GB, with
both USB and FireWire connections. FireWire runs like clockwork. With USB
2.0 and my current kernel, I get the occasional lockup. This is a symptom
of either the USB 2.0 chip (a VIA VT6202, which has known issues), the
kernel drivers themselves, my VIA694 motherboard chipset, or a combination
of all three.

My kernel is an official "straight from the source" 2.4.23 source tree. I'm
assuming you are using the kernel that is shipped with your distribution.
SuSE may have patched the kernel to provide more stability for USB 2.0 -
historically the SuSE distribution has leaned towards the desktop rather
than the server.

All I can say is give it a shot, it should work without a hitch. It might
be worth finding out the make of your USB 2.0 controller - ALi and NEC seem
to be reliable parts.

Hope this helps,
