I've been browsing through the mkisofs source code and the
answer is no. The ISO-9660 spec requires the directories be in
alphabetical order. Mkisofs does allow you to control the
placement of files on the disk, but I doubt that's what MP3
players care about.
So I'm going to add an option to mkisofs that will make the
directory order match the order in which the files were
specified by the user (or the order found during the source
direcory traversal operation). Stay tuned to see if that makes
the MP3 files play in the right order.
[Yes, I know I could just prefix the filenames with the track
numbers, but where's the fun in that? Besides, it's redundant
and it takes up precious space on the player's display.]
