Knoppix

- its free(dom) and free ( of charge )
- you can see what it is like before you install it
- you can see what Debian is like with an easy install
- has multimedia stuff already compiled into the kernel
- aside from the lack of gnome, its desktop friendly
- it fits on a single cd

I'll second that. Matter of fact, I'm running it right now as I type on an 8
year old Dell D300 with 192m of RAM. You can either download it yourself or
buy it for next to nothing from places like Cheapbytes.com or similar
sites. You'll love it!
