- ogg to mp3 converter sought
- Posted by andrei on November 28th, 2003
Hi,
I would need an application which converts ogg files into mp3 format
(to use on mp3 players since there are no ogg players, alas).
can anyone point me to such an app?
thanks

mp3 is a proprietary format and the patent holders require royalties to
create mp3 files. Such a conversion is also ill advised since both are
lossy compressions-- ie doing it twice will mean that you get the worst
of both ogg and mp3.
However, if you are still desireous, look at lame.

Ideally, it would be better to encode from CD to mp3, rather than ogg to
mp3. lame can do the conversion.
You might want to check out http://wiki.xiph.org/VorbisHardware/ which
lists hardware that can play Ogg Vorbis files.

I suppose the OP wants to keep the higher-quality ogg on HD and use the
crappy mp3s for his standalone mp3 player. There are not many standalone
mp3 players around which also play ogg.
