UPDATE:
Ok, got Suse8.2 and installed it.
Neither my ADSL modem nor my scanner are supported. FUCK!
Wasted about a day googling for drivers etc but no luck.
The modem is an Actiontec USB ADSL modem, any suggestions?
Linux looks fine and I would love to use it permanently, but the lack
of drivers is a serious downer. I suggest that ANYBODY and EVERYBODY
pesters the bloody manufacturers by emailing their product support and
asking for a linux driver, maybe they'll start to take Linux more
seriously.

PS.: Hey, some of you could even get together and set up a company
supplying industry with linux drivers!

Did you check out www.linux-usb.org? I'd think there was hope for the
USB modem, although depending on the DSL supplier, still might be tricky
to set up.
It doesn't surprise me that your scanner isn't supported; there are a lot
of scanners that are supported, and a lot that are not.

Yes, It seems like "they" (the nice people who write it for free) are
only just beginning to think of ordinary mortals who aren't really
computer enthusiasts.
Too few drivers and snazzy games is the only thing holding it back
from wiping out windows, imho.
Yes, many don't want a new hobby, they just want a no aggro operating
system (with drivers!).
It's an Artec AM12E+ . Couldn't find a driver with google.

The Sane search engine finds the scanner, says: "Unsupported. Chipset
unknown. Maybe similar to SCSI version or as6e?"
The AS6E has "basic" support with the sane-as6e backend, see
http://as6edriver.sourceforge.net/ . Or, it can break the scanner, in
which case you get to buy a supported scanner and your problems will go
away
I guess the manufacturer is not very interested in providing information
for the Sane hackers to write the driver.

Why not now? Linux seems to have some huge advantages over Windows, if
only half the effing clobber most people have would work with it.
Why not?
Like I said in a previous post, if some of "Them" who breathe Linux
set up a company churning out and maintaining Linux drivers for
industry "They" could make a living from it (if "they" have an ounce
of business savvy).
Look at this for example:
http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/howto.html
If that is the kind of shit one has to go through for the simple (in
Windows) act of installing a modem then that's pretty hopeless.
If they were self-employed they wouldn't be drones.
Hardly surprising.
So what you are saying is that Linux is not suitable for home users
and :-P Windows is.

I have no idea, I'm not going to take it apart.
hmmm, splendid :-/. I may already have to fork out for an adsl modem
that's supported, If I can find one....
Not yet... I'll wait and see if I get any response to the email I sent
both of them.

Thanks for the advice but I've tried dozens of sites including that
one. Actiontec apparently stated a few years ago that they were going
to supply Linux drivers with all their products. I'm waiting for a
reply from their support people.
Sadly...

well, while i agree that many folks are trying to make it "easy" for
