It doesn't have to. It just has to "contain" (i.e. be linked to) the
correct qt library for opera. The statically linked version does not
depend on qt - even if you have one or more versions of qt installed.
Then I don't think it has anything to do with qt.

It doesnt matter whether its static or shared. The qt libraries are qt
libraries and the difference is in when it is linked - during runtime or
during startup. And in static version the qt libraries are 'built' into
Opera itself.

Good deduction. But qt *might* have had more to do with the problem than
GTK.
PS: I am not sure what point you are trying to make here, anyway?
