Pan's Folders: why the hell do we have to select them?
Posted by GP on September 5th, 2003

Today, I boldly decided to try some newreaders from slrn to Knode.
I've been using Mozilla's for some time but I really don't like it.

Finally, it seems Pan would be the best to fit the bill. But why the
hell do you have to click a drop-down menu to select the folders. I
mean, you need those folders all the time to see what you've got in
your drafts, your messages ready to send, your sent messages, etc.

In pretty much every other newsreader, the folders appear at the top
or below the selected newsgroups. You just click them and read your
messages.

Is there any way around this? Is there a better offline newsreader? I
tried Sylpheed...

I've yet to find a newsreader I like better than Pan, but I agree with
you about the folders. However your concern is more likely to be
addressed if posted to the pan-users mailing list than via this
newsgroup. See: <http://mail.nongnu.org/mailman/listinfo/pan-users>

Well, before sending a message to developpers, I wanted to amke sure
there wasn't something I was getting wrong. Making it such a pain to
have access to filders seemed very weird to me. I had never seem
anything like this before.

Since you seem to find this annoying too, may I suggest you also write
a little note?

*You* do, perhaps. I rarely look at them, and so the difference
between one click and three clicks doesn't bother me all that much.

Posters to that list are mainly users (with concerns like yours), but
developers frequent it also, especially Charles Kerr, the "boss" of
the operation.

My big gripe with earlier releases of Pan was the hassle of saving
messages to folders, but this has been corrected in the current release.
I haven't been paying much attention to that list in recent months,
but if you bring up the question I'll add my 2 cents - maybe we'll
get something rolling. (Hint: be diplomatic.) Drop me an email
when you post and I'll be alerted to look for it.

I've sent an email. I don't really feel like setting up an army to get
this point true. It would just mean that the battle is pointless.

you used it and not de closed every time you reopen Pan.

No, it wouldn't bother me that much, which is why I'm not jumping up

Note that currently no milestone is set for doing anything about this
(take a good guess what "Bluesky" means).
