Possible LILO boot option?
Posted by Ron Gibson on October 1st, 2003

Is there an option I can pass hopefully at LILO boot time to disable
scanning for HD's not present?

I just have a CDROM on the mobo controller as a Master but every time it
tries to locate HDC and HDD which aren't present. The process is quite
slow.

BTW, I use an off board Promise controller for the HD's.

Sun and said:
GRUB:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/whatever hdc=noprobe hdd=noprobe

LILO:
image=/boot/vmlinuz
root=/dev/whatever
append="hdc=noprobe hdd=noprobe"

Note that this will only disable the kernel's scanning for hdd and hdc.
If the board's BIOS scans for these drives and it takes forever, there's
nothing you can do except tweak the BIOS settings and tell it that
there's nothing on that IDE interface. HTH,

I thought I'd seen noprobe around but couldn't seem to find it. I just
happened to remember while reading here.

Thanx, did the job and fixed one pause cause NFS takes some time too.
