- Prob Loading X Server - No Screens Found.
- Posted by Simon Jones on March 3rd, 2004
I've just installed Red Hat Linux 8.0 on an old IBM Netfinity 5000 for
the first time. I've never touched Linux before, so I'm at a bit
stuck with the error message that has come up when trying to start X
Server. It says:-
Fatal server error:
no screens found
I've looked around various forums, and it seems that the wrong driver
is loaded for my graphics card (don't know how true that is). The
thing is, how on earth do I install a new driver? It's got an S3
Trio64V2/GX in it. Could somebody point me in the right direction?
Maybe to a sub-dummy Linux forum?
Cheers
Simon

This may be all you need. Consult your monitor manual for appropriate
horizontal and vertical scan ranges.

I don't know about Red Hat, but in general, the distros just have a huge
heap of kernel modules ("drivers") lying around and whichever one is
necessary, gets loaded. I have had this problem also, and in my case it
indicated a bad config file. You should first figure out how to access the
file: either Red Hat has some sort of utility (which is probably graphical)
or you figure out where it is. It's SUPPOSED to be in /etc/X11, but even
according to the docs, X will look for it in about a dozen places. Someone
with more familiarity with this distro can feel free to help me out here.
Once you have the file, you should determine whether it has your hardware
listed correctly. The syntax is fairly transparent; you should look for
anything having to do with the monitor or the video card.
