Program to show a full-screen list of files
Posted by Maurice Batey on March 3rd, 2004

Under DOS (& OS/2) there was a nifty program called 'FL' (FileList),
such that e.g. "fl d:" would produce an interactive (but non-mouse)
full-screen list of files
on the d: disk, showing attributes, and allowing PF keys to be set up
to invoke e.g. editor on any file, or type in a command to be executed
on one or several files. One could Page up or down the list.
Similarly, 'fl d:\*.exe' would list just the .exe files, or could
specify just a directory.

Also, there was an FLTREE utility that would similarly show the
directory structure of a disk/partition, allowing navigation along the
tree and then FL of any directory or sub-directory.

Are there similar programs available under Linux?

Some else mentioned mc (Midnight Commander) which has some great features
(like exploding a cpio archive, or an rpm, to allow retrieving a single
file). Runs in a text terminal, and can also act as an ftp client.

Another one you might find interesting (if you can locate it) is
FileRunner, an X-based app, having some similarities with mc, and also
handy as an ftp client.

Both let you see the dir listing on the remote machine and select 1 or
more files for transfer; also do "resume" downloads.
