psmouse lost synchronization
Posted by sik0fewl on January 20th, 2004

Hi,

I'm running Gentoo Linux with the 2.6.1 kernel. My mouse used to work
when I was using Mandrake 9.1 with the 2.4.22 kernel.

The problem is when I get into X (kw: xfree, xfree86, x11), after a few
moments of moving my mouse it gets all jumpy and starts click randomly.
It stops after a while and then starts going screwy again later. Note
that the same thing also happens with gpm.

I'm using a Dexxa optical mouse.

Here is my dmesg output from the time I insert the mouse module
("modprobe psmouse")

input: ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse on isa0060/serio1
[drm:radeon_cp_init] *ERROR* radeon_cp_init called without lock held
[drm:radeon_unlock] *ERROR* Process 3860 using kernel context 0
atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x7a on
isa0060/serio0).
atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x7a on
isa0060/serio0).
atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x7a on
isa0060/serio0).
atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x7a on
isa0060/serio0).
psmouse.c: Explorer Mouse at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost synchronization,
throwing 2 bytes away.

---

The last line is repeated several times, throwing away 1-3 bytes every
time. I haven't looked into the radeon errors, but they are related to X
and so probably not the problem. I read that the atkbd.c errors are from
X and the kernel both trying to read from the keyboard in parallel.
After lots of searching, I still have no idea why my mouse is losing
synchronization, except that my mouse must not being polled often enough.

Any suggestions/directions?

Thanks,
Ryan

Possibly a bad connection or internally broken cable.
Connection comes and goes as the wire moves around?
