- read labels fra a dump
- Posted by Erik Fleischer on July 8th, 2003
Hi, I've been using dump and restore to backup my Linux machines to a SCSI
tape drive (using /dev/nst0). It works great. I'm using the -L option to
write a label to the backup set, as each tape has three or four backup sets.
After some thought, I've realized that, although I can write a label to a
backup set, I don't know how to read it back off of the tape, making it a
pretty useless feature. The manpages for dump mentions that the label can
be used by restore and file, but their manpages mention nothing about
labels. Can I retrieve this ? Also, is there a way I can automate reading
the label, e.g. can I run a shell command or do I have to run 'restore -i'
and read it from there? Thanks for any help..
