Regarding the possibility of copying SuSE...
Posted by * * * ZooR * * * on December 11th, 2003

hi!

There is one thing I haven't really understod when it comes to Linux.
If I buy an official box of say SuSE then I'm free to copy it freely
on all my computers right? But what does the copy right say if I copy
these discs and give copies to my friends... is that legal according
to the copyright?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Greetings...

Yes.

Perhaps: Mostly. SuSE is known to have distributed some non free
software. They should be located on a separate disk I think. You
should check the license terms of these. But otherwise, all CD
containing free software can be copied freely.

AIUI the SuSE (Professional and Personal editions) license permits you
to copy it and *give* it to your friends, but not to accept any payment
for it. I believe that this includes charging for media - you cannot. Of
course, you can lend it to them to copy themselves, or they can give you
blank CDs to copy it onto.

This does not apply to SuSE Linx Enterprise Server. This is licensed per
server. But home users are unlikely to be interested in this.

SuSE is pretty much unique in this respect. You can sell copies of most
other distros.

AFAIK, it is legal as long as the distributor doesn't make money off of it.

Copyright law prohibits you from doing certain things without
permission. In the case of SUSE, the license explicitly allows you to
copy and give away the disks. You are not, however, allowed to charge
for the copies.

Bottom line: read the license. Despite the merde from SCO, the
copyright holder is allowed to license you to do things that would
otherwise be prohibited.
