- Sylpheed: Emil AND newsgroups?
- Posted by Maurice Batey on March 3rd, 2004
Someone kindly suggested Sylpheed as an email client that also handles
Newsgroups, but having installed it I can't see any reference
whatsoever in it to Newsgroups!
What's the secret, then, folks?

I don't know how good it is, since I can't get it to recognize my IMAP
account properly, even with ssl enabled.

I'd say it's not the best news reader, but certainly useable. The nntp
support seems to have been an afterthought...A very nice email client, and
oh yeah, it does news too.
Odd that you've had problems with imap, since Sylpheed seems to be one of
the easiest to configure that I've seen...Any specific errors reported ?

It just can't connect. My U has ssl-protected IMAP which not every client
can handle. There are, as I understand, various levels of protection out
there, and some just aren't supported by all clients. For example,
neither sylpheed nor mahogany will work with the system, but netscape, as
well as evolution and balsa (which I use currently) do work.
Integrating news and e-mail would be nice, say, to be able to save news
posts to an e-mail folder. As it is I have to forward such posts to
myself.

Did you compile from sourse or use a package ? IIRC, ssl support is
something you have to add when compiling. Somthing like :
../configure --with-ssl --other-options-here...
I use Sylpheed at home as my main email client, connecting to my local
imap server, so I haven't seen the need to use ssl there on a regular
basis. And I think I disabled ssl on my imap server to save a few cpu
cycles.
But I do remember playing around with stunnel, both on the client end
and on the server, and Sylpheed was able to connect when I used that.
I agree...I usually use Pan at home, so I run into the same situation.
At work I'm stuck with Windows, so I use Thunderbird...Not too bad once
you stop it's annoying habit of wanting to send in html. And it has
about the best ldap client for addresses I've seen in email ( just MHO ).

I just tried the debian (testing) package.
I*had been using Evolution for mail, but my last update broke something
that evolution had been using, and installing evolution is getting more
and more complicated unless you install the whole desktop thing, which I
did not want to do. So, I went to balsa, which IMO has a really awesome
LDAP interface. I had to really fuss to get evolution to look at an
alternate to my local address book, but balsa does it automatically. It
is also much faster accessing the remote LDAP server, and searches better.

When did this happen? I installed Evolution 1.4 late last November,
