Via VT133 Evem Pcchips Main Board, Will it support any Linux Distros?
Posted by David J. on February 24th, 2004

Hi all,

Im writing in hopes that someone has already tackled this issue. I
purchased a Micro ITX motherboard off ebay in perfect sealed
condition. My goal is to build a ultra mini linux system with a
custom case and simple mods. The main board is from PCCHIPS, the
model EVEM, with a Via C3 Samuel2 1 giga pro 600 MHZ CPU, and a VT133
Chipset.

Chipset: VIA VT133
CPU: VIA C3 Samuel2 600MHz cpu
Memory: 1 DIMM 168pin SDRAM PC100 or PC133 256MB Max
Slot: one PCI 32bit slot
VGA: 3D Graphics Accelerator (Max 8MB shared)
IDE: (1) "one" Ultra DMA 33/66 modes
Lan: 10/100 network.
Sound: PC98 audio specification
I/O: 1 Floppy drive connector, 1 serial connector, 1 parallel
connector, 2 USB ports, 1 ps2 kb, 1 ps2 mouse port.
Size: 17cm x 19cm Mini Micro ATX form factor

From Ebay: (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...EBWA%3AIT&rd=1)

Im having all sorts of issues trying to install RedHat 9. Sometimes
it will kernel panic just after starting anaconda, and othertimes I
can get to the formatting of the system drive before it locks up. It
has run with some success mini distros like the Bootable Business Card
BBC image. Ive tried RH 6.2 and 7.3 which I had in an old binder,
pretty much the same results.

This link is anopther image of the main board I purchased:
http://www.lt21.com.tw/thinclient/evem.htm however listed there its a
VIA VT8601 Chipset / PLE133. However the manual shipped with the
mainboard insists its a VT133.

I had hopes before purchasing the board after reading this site (Linux
Technology LTD. But im not sure how im going to get this puppy up and
running. If you have any experience with distros that are said to be
known to work with this chipset I would be most appreciative in your
advice.

Thanks for your help!

It should digest e.g. Debian Woody without a hitch.
I built a pretty similar system with a VIA Mini-ITX board
and the same chipset, and it took Debian Woody beautifully.

Hi,

I have Slackware 9.0 installed on my VIA 800 MHz Eden based mini-itx system. I just installed it and was up and running with no problems.
