What does "Hm, dispatch protocol error: type 3 plen 4" mean?
Posted by John Winters on November 30th, 2003

Running md5sum on some files (Mandrake 9.2 isos actually) I got this message
a couple of times:

Hm, dispatch protocol error: type 3 plen 4

and then a few minutes later when running rsync (on a different terminal)
I got the same thing. Anyone any idea why could be generating it? Neither
the rsync nor the md5sum binary contains this string.

This looks like a rekeying issue with SSH, are you experiencing this
problem while connected to the machine via SSH? You can find more
information at http://freebsdhowtos.com/82.html

Hope this helps,

Yes, thank you - that seems to be the essence of the problem.

I was ssh'ing from a rather old Mandrake installation so it looks like
the ssh client on that box just didn't understand a request it was
getting from the server.

Many thanks
