Windows 3d Games On Linux
Posted by Gillian Hobley on January 5th, 2004

I am thinking of buying some games for my computer.

Unfortunately they are all written for Windows.

Will Windows 3d games run successfully on Linux, using either Wine, or
some sort of virtual machine ?

What additional software will I need to make these run ?

Will I need a commercial emulator, or will the open source stuff work?

Will I need any no-cd patches or other software patches to make these
operate under Linux ?

I specifically am interested in hearing from anyone who has any of the
following games running successfully under Linux.

Battlefield 1942
Medal of Honour
Call of Duty
Sim City 4
The Sims
Medieval Total War

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

look into WineX, I know that at least some of those will run under Linux
with WineX (BF 1942 for ex.). Also depends heavily on the quality of your
video card manufactures Linux drivers.

That sucks, doesn't it?

Some will, some won't. If you're going to try, make sure the game
supports OpenGl. That runs a lot better on Linux than on Windoze
anyway.

I've ran various things via Wine (including Halflife and Baldur's
Gate) but some other things only worked with the commercial WineX.

I suggest you try without first, and then see if you can install them
successfully. It's always better to be able to play without CD, and
sometimes it'll only work that way.

WineX is really good. For some games it works perfectly, but for others it
is almost as good on windows and some just plain don't work. If you go to
their site it will say which games work. But you also need good drivers for
your graphics card, I have an nvidia card and their linux support is really
good.

If you want to try WineX without paying anything then you can use the cvs,
apparently it's not quite as good, but it works fine for Steam and Call of
Duty (all I've tried). You can get an install script from here:
http://ting.homeunix.org/cvs_wine/GetCVSWineX
which comes from this site which has a howto for Steam in Linux:
